about

An ultra-ambitious writing collaboration of 30 emerging West Coast artists. Produced by Otis McDonald and Jazz Mafia, 24 all star vocalists were sent a short statement about the intention of the piece, an audio of the chorus, and a sparse instrumental demo. Each was tasked to write and record one or two phrases with no creative limitations. Incredibly, without hearing any of the others, these parts yielded a beautiful continuity when put together. Strings/Horns arranged by Matt Wong.

lyrics

The only way to get through
Is to go through
That’s all we can do
Cause there’s no turning back
Gotta stay on track
Til we get to the light
At the end of the tunnel (Ay)
I see the end of the struggle (Ay)
We’re gonna be alright
I see the light
I see the light
Viveca:
Head to the sky
Eyes on the prize
I’ve gotta shine - hey
Dreams over fears
Let your worries all disappear
Lilan:
Cuz we’re all that we got
If we lean on each other
Then we got a shot, ay
We gotta work it out
If we want change to come
Tym:
When it’s over we gon’ kick back
Laugh, have a kiki
Look at the scars
As a sign of the vic’try
Keith:
The whole world’s got some problems
What we gonna do to solve ‘em
Joe:
Sometimes we don't try, thinking we'll lose
But you fail couldn't take a chance, Boo Hoo
Natalie:
We’re living just one day at a time
To keep up a higher vibe
[CHORUS] Ad libs (Viveca)
Yvette:
In the darkest night
You struggle so hard to fight

Dare to open your eyes

Other side is paradise

Natty:
The light from the horizon of our brand new day
Is coming our way
Sarah:
They tried to bury us (Rise up)
They didn’t know that we were seeds
Erin:
Darkness cannot drive out darkness

Only light can
Hatred cannot drive out hate
Only love can
Olivia:
Worked our way up from the past
Sho do know our strength gon’ last
Trance:
We’ve been through so much drama
From slave trauma to Obama
But like our dads and mamas
We’ll keep marchin’ til nirvana
[CHORUS] Ad libs (Keith & Yvette)
Chris Burger (CB)
Be sure to get ur ticket
Your 2 kids,
Ur padnah and ur white picket

Good livin’ when the vision is specific

Divine state of mind
And a fine place to visit
Michael Blake
We’ve come so far yet still Looks so far away
But each and everyday We keep it pushing
To make change So
Don’t be muzzled, befuddled, disrupted
By distractions - Maintain The Mission
Your motive and passion
Mani Draper
Objects appear closer - Goapele

Get to the cake

I’ll never need a chauffeur
Self-drive to 10 and 2
Please don’t make me expose ya
Made slaves out of metaphors

We built another building

When they bolt the door

Tommy Soulati
It makes you wonder why we be getting so meta for
Deep Love for the people, hope at the core
Whatever we can imagine

It’s really up to us to manifest and manage

Then repair the damage damnit
Dan Wolf
Keep lapping racists cause you know this is a marathon

But short term memory’s a ghost like puffing marijuan

Testing mental health

Rest and use your breath

Essential right mind

It’s dark right before you let your light shine
Seneca
Panthers programs

Local slow jams

Parks and positives

Sparks and politics

Through all the struggles and decisions

We can't understand

No need for medals or no ribbons

Just defeat the man

Tommy Soulati
There it go (what)
It’s the light at the end of the tunnel (Oh)
Choose to knuckle through don’t buckle

Just follow the light
Just follow the light
Meet me on the other side
There it go (what)
It’s the light at the end of the tunnel (Oh)
Choose to knuckle through don’t buckle (yeah)
Just follow the light
See ya on the other side
Solas:
It guess it takes deadly disease from overseas
And stolen breath from a knee on neck (black death)
Can’t be here no more
Got my bags packed full with passport sittin’ right the door (the door)
AJ:
Got the bigger picture on my mind
And I know I’ll get through it this time
Kyle:
Clear vision is a choice
The channel is your voice
Rich:
Why do we cry about those who lost their way
If you can see the light
Maybe you can help them find their way
Yvette:
Set your hands in mine

You won’t walk alone
Our hearts stay strong
Eyes ahead

And carry on
[CHORUS] Ad libs (Rich & Yvette)
Soulati:
CHIN UP - There’s goes the light, I see the light, Move towards the light
At the end of the tunnel (Natty: Keep your chin up)
CHIN UP - Look up ahead, Get out your head, Get through instead
To the end of the struggle (Keith: Keep your head up)
CHIN UP - There’s goes the light, I see the light, Move towards the light
At the end of the tunnel (Natty: You gotta, gotta get out of your head)
CHIN UP - Look up ahead, Get out your head, Get through instead
To the end of the struggle (Keith: Hold your chin toward the sky)
Amber:
Get up [4x]
Move up [4x]
Look up [4x]
Sólás:
CHIN UP - We can't leave the country no way
Borders closed like Sunday
But watch me, I’m amazing
CHIN UP - I’ll guess I’ll stay and teach these children
And unpack with heads up,

So tired but they blessin’ me
Jefferson:
CHIN UP - Keep your chin up (Ay)
You are not alone
Sarah & Trance:
We’ll make it out of the rubble
And be the good kind of trouble
Keith & Tym:
The only way to get through
Is to go through
Amber:
So whatever it is - Get up
Kyle:
There goes it, there goes it, there goes the light
Keith:
And we are going to be alright
Amber:
Get up [4x]
Move up [4x]
Look up [4x]
We can stand til the end of the struggle
Viv:
Go through
