A Jazz Mafia song that has multiple versions isn’t uncommon; this one, written for Jazz Orchestra as an instrumental, also has a vocal version with lyrics by Trance Thompson that will be released sometime in 2024. This piece was originally inspired by the murder of Dewey Tucker, a prominent young talent on the bass who was taken from us too early. Composer Adam Theis says “The night I heard of Dewey’s passing, like everyone in our community, I was just devastated…This music came to me, so I sat down and hammered it out real quick as a sketch and moved on. A few weeks later I listened to the track and felt something really special and kept it in my production cue to work on. When we were working on a Treat Social Club show that needed an ethereal, pensive opening song, this one came to mind right away, so I finished it up and orchestrated it for the event. Since then, we’ve performed it in a few different versions and it continues to evolve.”
