about

Our national anthem begins and ends with a question. It’s literally asking, “is our flag still there? Did we last the night?” We still have a lot of questions to ask ourselves and our country. Questioning ourselves and our government is as patriotic as the national anthem itself.
- Katy Stephan

lyrics

O say can you see
through the wildfire smoke and the haze
can you still hear your brother say
I can’t breathe

Through the dawn’s early light
a child wakes up in a cage
Are you proud?

Tears streaming down in broad stripes
she looks up at bright stars
and dreams of a better life

Tear the ramparts down
It’s twilight now

And the rocket-launching, fully automatic,
high capacity magazine
How many rounds do you need
to stand against tyranny?
How many?

O say does that star-spangled banner
waver in a maelstrom of lies?
Does it still fly?
Does it still fly
Fly over a land of compassion
Home of immigrants and freed slaves

O say
Say it’s not too late
to be who we said we’d be
If you’re still brave
Oh please
say
