The story of a “lost album” from a decade ago:
10 Years ago a dozen of Jazz Mafia’s core writers and producers collaborated on epic work of music as our follow-up to Brass, Bows & Beats Hip-Hop Symphony. This was to be our second suite exploring intersections of Hip-Hop, Jazz and Orchestral music, inspired by and set in our beloved San Francisco. In early 2012, four months of weekly writing sessions wrapped up and we went into the studio to record the album which would be released that summer and supported by our festival shows. Shortly thereafter the hard drives were stolen in a break-in at our manager’s studio and everything, including the backups were gone. Over the years, we’ve worked to put many of the pieces back together by painstakingly recreating the original skeletons and even re-recording the orchestra on some tracks. This music marks an important time in Bay Area musical history - and a paramount opus of work by our collective.
Suite San Francisco was born out of a mutual passion shared by many of our core composers for historical San Francisco events; both recent and distant. Emperor Norton ends up being the inspiration behind two tracks “Love Riot” and “Subjects of Norton”. “Lady Luck” and “Listen” are takes on the high stakes risk and reward of early gold-rush settlers in the area as well as the “have/have not” duality of the modern SF tech boom and skyscraper era.
