about

This album documents the World premiere live performance of Jazz Mafia's Brass, Bows & Beats Hip-Hop Symphony. Made possible by an incredible grant opportunity awarded to leader Adam Theis, the entire 50 piece Jazz Mafia collective mobilized in creating this ambitious 65 minute suite of music for a good part of a year leading up to the premiere on April 18th, 2009 at The Palace of Fine Arts in SF.

Theis wrote the music with dozens of the instrumentalists and vocalists in mind as featured performers. Each vocalist also took role as key collaborators in the journey, writing lyrics for themselves as well as others.

Theis and his team struggled with naming it a "Hip-Hop" Symphony at the time of it's birth. Clearly it wasn't going to be all Hip-Hop, or exclude Jazz , Classical etc... The decision to use the term but to imagine it as what Hip-Hop could look like in the future was the intent. The prophecy turned out to be somewhat accurate if you look at artists like Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington, Snarky Puppy and many others that have continued blurred the lines between Hip-Hop, Jazz and other forms over the past decade.

The recordings from the premiere of BBB turned out beyond the teams expectations and the album was quickly mixed and released in hopes of getting a few more events for this Titanic orchestra for festivals in the following year. Within a few weeks of the premiere, the band was being booked for 6 show runs at Yoshi's in SF as well as getting offers from many of the top Jazz festivals in North America.

Even though this group ended up performing countless times from 2010-2012, this first performance still packs so much magic and documents one of those nights that the 1000 people at the show would never forget and it became a sign post of celebration for a whole community of musicians and music lovers in the Bay Area. Jazz Mafia had been doing its thing for almost ten years at this point, but this was when it really became a movement for keeping real music alive.
