This is a live performance from July 2020, at the height of the pandemic lockdown when we were recording live videos regularly in various outdoor remote locations all over the Bay Area, since there was no other way to perform.
For this session, we brought the recording studio out to Alameda and filmed in a huge courtyard in the middle of a condemned building. We assembled a 27 piece orchestra, Adam orchestrated the song and we got to work. This performance was from one continuous take but is split into 3 parts for the digital release. Part 1 is the live version of the song "All At Once"; JM horns recorded on the studio version of this song (Konkrete Violet full length Album, 2020). Part 2 is an additional piece Adam composed for the live session, featuring a freestyle from Mani Draper and sax solo by Tommy Occhiuto. Part 3, was a surprise for everyone on the session; Right before the final take was recorded, Adam walked over to percussionist Aaron Kierbel and instructed him to start soloing and end up in a new groove at the end of the song. You can hear everyone's surprise when Part 2 ends and Aaron keeps going on the cajón. Eventually the two other drummers jump in, followed by a 100% improvised jam by the band featuring the dueling trumpets of Ross Eustis and the late Rich Armstrong. Nothing like a full-on surprise to kick an orchestra of the West Coast's top musicians into high gear!
